HDR: First Step

A friend told me about HDR this week.

The principle is the following:

1- Taking three RAW pics on a tripod of the same thing

2- AEB -2 / 0 / +2

3- Upload the 3 pics in a magic product [photomatix]

And magic, a new pic is born.

Photomatix: Bad. I’m sorry to have to say that, but it creates a lot of color artefact, spoiling your image.

I started thinking … the concept is wonderful. It can be used. But it should be used like all other image manipulations. Meaning via layers.

I read on a blog someone doing it using MERGE TO HDR in photoshop. For your information, photoshop displays the following message when you try to use it … “Quality will be lost; you should not use this feature” …something like that.

This is my first HDR pic. I did a very big mistake, which explained the poor quality. My ISO was set @ 640. I forgot to change it from my last photo shoot. It should be the lowest possible. 100 or even 50 if your camera allows you to do so.

You have to use the following layer in this order:

  • Copy of the backdrop
  • Layer +2 (overlay or light)
  • Layer -2 (overlay)
  • Layer 0 (which is the perfect exposure)

Do not hesitate to play with the blending.

Why do I copy the original pic on top of the other layer? To reveal only the interesting color of the HDR and keep the quality of the original pic.

(of course, this pic is a bad example since I was using the ISO640!!!)

But the concept is here …

The faces of Thaipusam

We woke up at 2:00am this morning, Sunday 8th of Feb 2009 and left for Batu Cave [Malaysia] to try to get nice shots of the Thaipusam festival. We came back at 6:00am, slept a bit and started to post-process the pics at 10:00am.

I will process more after lunch,

Capturing the first moment

Nowadays, pregnancy includes surfing. Not with a board, but more with a mouse.

The future mum and dad are very busy googling and yahooing to find a name!!! the baby name.

Sorry for adding to your surfing, but have you thought about capturing the first moment with your baby.  What about a fine art photography of your baby, or you and your baby.

This will be your first family picture.

Close google and yahoo.  Visit my website :

Because baby portraiture is something I have never done yet, I will not charge the first 5 clients for my time.
Only for the pictures you want me to print will be charged.

EVEN BETTER !!! I am giving to the first baby 5 prints free.

(do not forget, I am based in Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur 😉

See you soon,

Chinese New Year gave me the necessary time to complete my website. It was not an easy thing, but it’s done …

Enjoy the visit and talk to your friend about it 😉

Few days ago, I was taking outdoor corporate photos of my friend Raghbir.

And I decide to go off the road for one picture.

This is the result after post-processing…

Apple in Malaysia

Hi Guys,

In case you do not know about it, APPLE finally came with an apple store website for Malaysia :

5 Weeks ago, when I ordered my Macbook Pro in the shop, this website did not exist. Yesterday, I called the shop. They have still not received it; but, checking on the Apple website, they can deliver within 5 business days!!!

Apple is not really fair to it network, which does all the marketing.

Since the guy was not able to give me any delivery date, I cancelled my order and will order it via the apple website.

Chapter1: Drink & Sailing, you must do both at the same time…

When I was in France, I used to sail the weekend on a lake, on what we call, a. sailing dinghy. Small, fun and a lot of action because it is very responsive to the wind.

After I moved to Malaysia, this has been forgotten, as a lot of other things; But this need to be on the sea, to feel the wind of my face was stronger and stronger year after year. Finally, beginning of this year, I pushed my wifey to take sailing lessons with me. We enrolled in the RYA competent crew training, at the Royal Selangor Yacht Club.

This was not anymore a dinghy, but a Jeanneau 36 footer. Interesting, but slow. Luckily, on the last day of our 5 days course, we had 24 knots of wind, which push our fatty Jeanneau to 8.4 knots.

To give you an idea … for those who live in Malaysia … at the speed of 8.4 knots, you will need 10 hours to go from Port Dickson to Port Klang.

Proud of our new RYA certificate, we decided to gain more experience, and so we subscribed to the milescatcher program… 7 days and nights on a sailing boat … 500 miles … 4 nights sailing on a Jeanneau 45 footer!!!

Looks Great!!!

We would be sailing from Tioman Island to Ko Samui, visiting on the way, Pulau Tulai, Pulau Tenggul, Pulau Redang, Pulau Perhentian.

Looks Great!!!

Reality no’1

– No Wind during the day; so we were obliged to use continuously the engine.

– Storm during the night; so we were obliged to use continuously the engine.

What do you want to do during 7 days on a sailing boat when there is NO F*CKING WIND?

Possibility n’1: Make love, not sailing

The sailing boat is under the sun, no shadow at all … 34′ outside … 45′ inside.

ya ya ya … you are all thinking so, do it outside; you guess there are not so many boats around. Unfortunately, we were with another couple on this boat … too bad

Possibility n’2: Drink Beer.

When we came on board, we have discovered that there were 3 times more beer than water. It was funny. We understood later why. The other couple was opening the first beer at 9 am. Average consumption per person 9 beers a day.

One more time, there is nothing to do on a sailing boat when there is no wind … And around Malaysia … it is 80% no wind 15% storm!!!

Reality no’2:

I’ll tell you tomorrow. Good night!
