How to make Calvados? (1)

Hi There,

You may think it is a bit odd to talk about Calvados on a Photography blog, but you know me, I always find a pic to insert in my post.

What is Calvados?
The Calvados is an apple base alcohol at 40% to 45%.

Step by Step…

First you need to find apple. In Normandy, we have two kinds of apples. The one you eat and the one you will use to make the cider. You can try to eat the second one. One will be ok; at the third one, you will go to toilet!

These apples looks like that … not beautiful at all!

What is this cider I was talking about?

The cider is an apple base alcohol. (yes, i know … again). But this one is 4.5% to 6.5%.

To make Calvados, we need Cider, so let’s start!

1) Get some apples (no cooking apple, not to sweet; try to mix different kind of apple if you can not get our special apples to make cider)

2) Wash the apples

3) Cut the apples in 4 and put them inside this wonderful engine, a cider press:

pressoir

You will then get APPLE JUICE!!!

4) Then, you  put your apple juice in a keg. Ensure that your keg in full. Otherwise, your cider won’t be drinkable!!!

5) Remove the cork at the top of the keg and leave it like that for few weeks fermenting.

6) Put back the cork and leave your cider to mature for 6 to 8 months.

7) Transfer it in glass bottle.

8) DON’T DRINK IT !!!        REMEMBER, WE NEED THIS CIDER TO MAKE CALVADOS!!!

Finally, I think I will open one bottle of cider and stop here for today! We will do the Calvados tomorrow.

Good nite!

Thanks for sharing but where to get this stuff in Malaysia lah? Also, assumably there would be a difference of taste depending on weather. In what season is cider made in France or other parts of Europe?

Nil: I’m pretty sure that we can find barrel in Malaysia, but for the cider press, you will have to make it yourself!!!
We make the cider when we get the apples … meaning in October.
